It is due to a dormant chickenpox virus that quietly stays in your nerve cells. Individuals who had the chicken pox infection and those who were vaccinated in childhood are both at risk. While it typically affects individuals 50 years of age and older, it can occur at any time. It can be triggered by stress or a weakened immune system due to medications or other illnesses.

A prodrome of burning pain, or a tingling sensation can first appear days before you see an actual rash! This is followed by red hive-like bumps that can turn into fluid-filled blisters that will crust over and heal in about 7-10 days. The hallmark of shingles is that the rash typically appears on one side along a dermatome or a somewhat linear area of the skin that corresponds to the affected nerve. Although the rash will typically heal with or without minor scarring, it can lead to some serious sequelae including, post-herpetic neuralgia, a possibly debilitating lingering pain/burning in the area of the eruption that can last months, as well as damage to hearing or vision if nerves of the face are affected. Therefore, early recognition and treatment are paramount! Treatment of shingles with antivirals within the first 2-3 days of symptoms can shorten the duration of the rash and prevent long-term sequelae.

Can shingles be prevented? Yes, there is a vaccine available called Shingrix for those that are 50 and older as well as other susceptible individuals. Even if you have had shingles in the past or previously received a different shingles shot, you are still eligible for this new vaccine!

Getting prompt care from a board-certified dermatologist not only helps speed your recovery, but also reduces the risk of long-term pain and nerve damage. If you’re experiencing symptoms of shingles or suffering from a complication we can offer treatment.
